"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade"
Edith Anne Fleming (Buff)
Edith Anne Fleming, 91, passed away, February 6th, 2026, at her home in Vacaville, California due to natural causes. She is well known to many in the community by her nickname Buff Fleming.
She was born June 7, 1934, as the only child of Alfred & Edith Frehe who lived in San Rafael, California. She lived there until age 10, then her family moved to West Los Angeles. She attended University High School and then attended the University of California Los Angeles. Inspired by her aunt who worked all over the world, she pursued an education directed toward a career in Social Work.
At UCLA she met and fell in love with David Fleming while working on the Home Coming Committee. They were married on September 3, 1955, on the hottest day of the year, she would remind people. Almost immediately, David started his career as an officer in the U. S. Air Force. They were transferred every 2 to 3 years and soon she was the mother of 3 boys: Matthew, born in Texas; Michael, born in Florida; and Richard, born in Texas. With David gone for long periods, she was often head of the household. The family was finally transferred to Travis AFB and settled in Vacaville in 1966. She has lived in Vacaville for 60 years now. David passed away in December of 2024. They were together for 69 years, and she now has grandchildren and great-grandchildren which kept life interesting.
Buff joined the Vacaville City Planning Commission in 1970 and eventually became the first woman chairperson in 1974. When David retired and began his political career in 1978, Buff put full attention into supporting his efforts in service to the city. Buff & Dave have always been very involved with city politics and events and were selected as Grand Marshalls for the 2017 Fiesta Days Parade.
Buff’s mother was a Girl Scout leader that loved the outdoors, and she was an experienced camper at a young age. David was an Eagle Scout and they both were very involved in Vacaville Boy Scout Troop 488 well beyond the time children graduated. She has 3 sons and 3 grandsons who are also eagle scouts. Buff held many positions within the committee supporting the Troop. She was involved in many outings, including a trip when she rappelled down a cliff inside the large chamber of Moaning Cavern in the Seirra foothills. She helped organize and participated in 4 tours to Philmont Scout Ranch. Buff was ultimately recognized by the Boy Scouts with the prestigious Silver Beaver Award for her work in Scouting.
Buff was responsible for starting Vacaville’s first recycling center which generated funds for the Boy Scout Troop and other local troops. This was one of the first in the state and operated until 1990. She was instrumental in fundraising for the Great Wonders Playground and establishing Alamo Creek Park. She is a long-time supporter of the Vacaville Museum Guild, Vacaville Concert Society, Solano Symphany Orchestra and the Sylvan Legacy Singers. She is also a long-time member of the Vacaville Saturday Club and Soroptimist Club.
She is survived by 3 sons, Matthew, Michael, Richard, and 5 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
